The Lord’s Prayer: Week 5 – Thursday

WELCOME! If you’re new and just joining us, start here — if not, read below…

Week 5 – Thursday

Luke 9:23 ESV “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Daily. One decision followed by one decision followed by one decision… Jesus makes it incredibly clear that following Him and yielding to the heavenly Father is a daily commitment. Each day is new and it gives us an opportunity to start over. Following Christ isn’t an insurmountable task that we have to accomplish all at once. We don’t have to be perfect. We are to be becoming perfect as we follow Him and become more like Him. He only asks that we give each day to Him. He will do the rest.

We invite you to share your insights and thoughts by leaving a comment below or by replying to another comment.

If you would like, you can unpack the verse S.O.A.P style:
S = Scripture; what is it that I’m reflecting upon.
O = Observation; what does this mean to me, what do I notice?  What got my attention? Can I rephrase this in my own words?
A = Application; how can I apply this into my life?  What action can I take as a result of what I just learned
P = Prayer; based on what I’ve learned and my application/action, pray – talk to God about your insight, ask for help, offer thanksgiving.

S: Luke 9:23 ESV “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

O: Surrender is the first word that comes to my mind when I read this verse. To truly live, we must “die” to our selves – deny our finite for His infinite. This is what it means to take up his cross. Following Him in the good times is easy, our true commitment to Him reveals itself when the trials come — we will always be faced with trials. This verse says “IF” anyone “would” come after me… Christ knew this would not be easy — because of how powerfully evil the world is — but he clearly tells us what we need to do, IF we WOULD choose Him. Making this choice gives a whole new meaning to Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread — we are surrendered to our ONLY Source who is faithful to provide.

A: I’m doing my very best, I can say that from the bottom of my heart. Each day is a new day, and I choose Him. My heart desires to live how He would live in all situations. To love how He would love. To respond and treat others how He would. I find myself having to surrender and deny my humanness MANY times throughout the day and look UP to Him. ONLY when I’m drawing near to consistently Him through prayer, meditation, and His word can I be strong enough to look-up consistently when faced with the ickiness of the day.

P: Father, never let ME separate myself from YOU. I know the ball is in my court and I need to choose daily to deny myself, take up my cross and follow You. This is where I desire to be — this is where I find JOY, PEACE, SERENITY. I’ve never been more content that I am when I am close to You. Truly — You give me each day my daily bread. Forgive me for the days I forget this and live unsurrendered. Thank You for the grace and mercy that free give me each day to start fresh and begin again. Today, You and me Father will be a blessing to everyone we talk to and meet. Shine Your light through me, may others meet You when they meet me. Lead me. Guide me. I lift up my meetings to You today Father and the time I will work on the book — You know exactly what needs to be done to be productive, may Your plan and will be done, not mine. I love you. t

I tend to complicate so many things in my life. This is so simple, though not always easy, surrender and trust. Daily! Sometimes moment by moment. Thank you God for Who You are and how You work in my life!
