The Lord’s Prayer: Week 3 – Tuesday

WELCOME! If you’re new and just joining us, start here — if not, read below…

Week 3 – Tuesday

1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.”

There is POWER in God’s name. His name isn’t simply a label to keep us from confusing Him with someone else. It is wrapped up in His entire BEING.  David understood the power to be had in claiming the name of-the-most-High God when He faced the 9-foot giant, Goliath.  He claimed the name of his God and won the victory! We too can accomplish great things in His name if we but claim it and identify ourselves with it. The name “Christian” literally means “little Christ” – we bear His name! We have His power within us. What are you afraid of? What “giants” are you facing? Face these struggles head on in the name of your God and WIN!

We invite you to share your insights and thoughts by leaving a comment below or by replying to another comment.

If you would like, you can unpack the verse S.O.A.P style:
S = Scripture; what is it that I’m reflecting upon.
O = Observation; what does this mean to me, what do I notice?  What got my attention? Can I rephrase this in my own words?
A = Application; how can I apply this into my life?  What action can I take as a result of what I just learned
P = Prayer; based on what I’ve learned and my application/action, pray – talk to God about your insight, ask for help, offer thanksgiving.

AH this is so GOOD! Here’s my reflections this morning:

S: 1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.”

O: It always amazes me how God seems to work on us in “themes.” Before taking time to reflect on this Scripture, I came across this quote in my Twitter feed: “Remember the cross guarantees that adequate provision has already been made for everything you will face today.” -Paul Tripp
We’ve been EQUIPPED with adequate provision; we POSSESS all the power we will ever need. I get overwhelmed by seemingly insignificant things and huge giants alike, but why? My own agenda gets in the way and blocks the power of God in my life. Yes I possess it, but it’s my choice whether I let it sit there in my soul dormant or whether I yield to it and allow it to flow through my life. What if David had allowed his own agenda to take precedence when he saw Goliath from the safety of Saul’s camp? I mean, really, he could have been like, “Wow, I hope somebody can beat that crazy man, I would, but I’m no fighter. I’m just a kid, and I don’t have armor or anything..somebody else is surely better equipped than I am.” Instead David remembered the POWER he possessed in the name of his God. He chose to claim it and WIN! I want God’s power to be ALIVE in my life today! I want to WIN, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I can when I claim His NAME!

A: I want to begin every day claiming the Name of my God. That is the source of power. I need to identify with Him and yield to Him every day – there lies the secret of my success.

P: Father, you are my GOD, my LORD. I come before you in Your Name claiming your power. Show me your glory, Lord, live through me. Help me stay out of my way to allow for You to work and conquer the giants looming in my path. Thank you for equipping me. Thank you that I can win in Your Name…

YES –> We’ve been EQUIPPED with adequate provision; we POSSESS all the power we will ever need <– This is a promise. Our amazing Father is all Powerful, He goes before us, and with us!!

wow rebekah! good stuff. i needed to hear this today…..

    here is my reflection;

1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.”

like rebekah said….david could have took the ‘common sense route’ and backed away from the situation. he could have listened to his circumstances…which would have sounded something this; “um, yeah, totally unequipped here. this is a job for someone else. if God wanted ME to fight this battle, He would have made me much taller, and much stronger, not to mention a sword and some armor!” but david did not focus on his circumstances and he did not focus on what he ‘did not have’. he did not allow his ‘giants’ to defeat his faith in God. God gave david everything he needed to defeat his enemy….even when it looked like david was NO match whatsoever.

I want to remember that God has given me everything i need in this world to get through impossible situations. david still had to show up to his battle. he still had to be faithful in knowing his God would give him favor. he still faced his giant square in the eye…figuratively and literally. i want to apply this truth to every giant i face in this life. God has equipped me even when i feel totally inadequate for the battle. just like david, no armour, no sword…just some little sling shot he made with his own hands.

Father, thank you for your world of encouragement today. as i face my own personal giants, help me to see that i need not cower and fear in their presence. help me to remember that you have equipped me for these battles, even when it looks like i have nothing at all that i ‘need’ to get through it. like david, you have given me resources in unexpected places….my tiny slingshots may seem like nothing in this battle, but you will help me to utilize them to your glory. thank you for all that you provided in equipping me for the battles in this life. i love you father….xo

    • Rebekah says:

Your prayer encouraged me, Shelbi – He HAS given us resources in unexpected places, & it is up to me to be open to them. Thank you for being so transparent…

    • Teri says:

Oh my goodness girls…I didn’t get a chance yesterday to unpack this scripture – thank YOU two for sharing…I am BLESSED by your words!!

Shelbi, I love how you said in your prayer, “my tiny slingshots” — I can SO relate to that, sometimes what’s in front of us seems so LARGE and all we have is our tiny little heart to face it. Our limited mind, willpower — BUT He is faithful IF we call upon His name.

Last night at my small group I was reminded that each morning I must PUT ON the armor of God — when we get up and put on our armor, we are choosing to face it ALL with Him, we are claiming His “hallowed Name”

Ephesians 6:13-17 “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

  3. Terry says:

Oh girls don”t allow me to slip away from this study. I am a teacher and heading back to work, I can already feel myself hopping on the hamster wheel. So, please pray for me, I want to be sure to do this, and some other great habits I started this summer. I am going to catch up on yesterday and today’s post now.

S: “David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s armies-The God of armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”
    1 Samuel 17:45

O: I heard something about the word BUT today. We need to keep it in the right place. And in this scripture the but is in the right place. He didn’t say I come in the name of the Lord..BUT you come with sword, spear and javelin. We can put anything on the left of that but…because on the right, we have our mighty God. I do not believe I will ever actually truly understand all I have in my Heavenly Father. I have such a small mind at times. I need to keep reminding myself of his mightiness.

A: No matter what I face…family problems, financial, direction, worries, etc……BUT I have an almighty God and He has the host of angels, an army to help me with any and all problems.

P: My heavenly Father, thank you for continuing to reveal yourself to me. Help me to remember daily your power in my life…and to hand all my problems to you. Help me to keep you on the right side of my buts. Help me to stay engaged in these discussions and your word as my schedule gets tougher. My schedule will be busy and hectic, BUT I have an almighty Father who can provide all the time I need. Thank you Father, I love you.

    • Teri says:

Terry — we are SO grateful to have YOU here!! YES — BUT — I have an almighty God — YES!! Thank you for sharing your concern with your schedule…

Father, YOU alone know every detail about Terry’s day — I ask that you would multiply her time as she prepares and transitions into this next season in her life. You are showing up and revealing Yourself to her and Your promise to us is You will NEVER leave us or forsake us — Your plans for us are for good. So father, I claim this for Terry as she dives into her schedule that she would see You in every detail. Lord, I pray that she would embrace Your Grace and not get caught up in “rigidity” — James 4:8 simply says, “Come near to me, and I will come near to you” — You know her heart, her desire, her longing to live and abide in You — What a blessing Terry has been to our study. Thank YOU for bringing us together. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING in Your world happens by mistake. We love You and trust You. Amen.
