Week 3 – Friday

SCRIPTURE
John 14:13-14 “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

REFLECT
It’s an invitation. Our Father wants us to ask, to communicate with Him. He gives us a promise to claim. The only condition is that we ask in His name. There is nothing too small or unimportant to God. He knows what we need before we ask, but He tells us to ask just the same. He wants a relationship with us; He wants us to come to Him with our joys, our trials, our praise, and our love. How is your prayer life today? Is prayer a “last ditch effort” for you? It should be our first response to life! We have been given His name, we have been given the right to claim its power. What a GIFT!

We invite you to share your insights and thoughts by leaving a comment below or by replying to another comment.

If you would like, you can unpack the verse S.O.A.P style:
S = Scripture; what is it that I’m reflecting upon.
O = Observation; what does this mean to me, what do I notice?  What got my attention? Can I rephrase this in my own words?
A = Application; how can I apply this into my life?  What action can I take as a result of what I just learned
P = Prayer; based on what I’ve learned and my application/action, pray – talk to God about your insight, ask for help, offer thanksgiving.

He fulfills ALL His promises…GO GOD!

S: John 14:13-14 “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

O: This is an extremely bold statement that Jesus makes — we know this is important because He repeats Himself. BUT He is very specific about how we ask, in His name. Which means according to His will and His character. SO this could seem like a catch 22 — IF I ask in the Lord’s name, it has to be what the Lord wants? YES it does! God will not grant a request contrary to His will and nature. The promising part is that as we walk closely with Him, abide in Him, seek Him first — our hearts desires align with His and our asking aligns with His will and plan for us. I’m not saying we should hold back from asking EVER what we feel we need to lay at His feet — I just understand that He will not answer our prayers if they are coming out of selfishness and our human will. He’s is our protection, our provider, our source — His plan is perfect, His timing is perfect. If we ask something that is not according to His will “thy name” we cannot expect to “have our way.”

A: I only want what He wants. Seriously, I’ve seen my “path” and it’s not pretty. It leads to heartache, insanity, and discontentment. My consistent prayer is Your will be done, Father, not mine. Whatever it is, I trust His ways are higher and far greater than my ways.

P: Father, thank you for this promise — I see it to be accurate and true. You DO IT — I see the everyday answers to prayers. I see everyday miracles in my life and in the lives of those around me. Forgive me when I attempt to put my will ahead of yours. I never want to walk outside of your will again, it’s a lonely dark place that leads to destruction. Thank you for your forgiveness, grace, and mercy — I embrace every ounce of it for my humanness; my sinful nature. I need You in a big way. Together we can make a difference. Together we can encourage and help others. Give me the words I need today Father. You know the appointments I have, the call, the meeting, the dinner. You know the appointments I don’t know that I have yet. Whatever You have me do today, I simply want to be a light shining. May my words be invisible so Your words are visible. I surrender my will to Yours. I love you. I need you. t

I love the commentary on this one. I do believe that God wants us to talk with Him, all the day long. about our hopes, our dreams, our hurts, our joys. He woos’ us to Him by telling us that IN HIS NAME we have been heard and we have someone to listen to the secret cries and cares of our heart. In our busy days – it’s so nice to know that we can be communing with God, in an intimate way.

I need to apply this to my life on a continual basis. this knowledge that He is listening…even before i speak it, He knows my heart and my desires. and when i whisper to Him, He is there for me. like no one else ever can be. I want to speak to Him in ‘breath’ prayers…I want to be always communing with my God…daily…and moment by moment.

Father, help me to keep my heart focused on you. help me to always know that you will be here to listen and answer. give me the grace to accept that sometimes the answers will be delayed, but that you always listen and hear me. give me grace to accept the immediate answer of ‘no’ when you protect me from that which i ask, but will hurt me in the long run. i can only imagine the countless times you have protected me from trials unseen, even though my prayers were asked in ignorance at the time. thank you for always taking such good care of me. i love you father. xo
