I take the whole concept of friends and friendship seriously.  I’ve learned what it means to be a good friend, and I’ve experienced hardships with others who I thought were my friends.  I know there have been times where I could’ve done things differently and been a better friend.  As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized how very valuable friendships are and am blessed to have some very solid friendships. grateful.

I’m noticing that the word friend gets thrown around loosely these days. I think I’ve become more sensitive to the word friend since I created my account on Facebook.  Sending and receiving “friend requests” and now having over 500 “friends” I’m realizing that most of these “friends” are acquaintances.  Some of them?  Well, I don’t know if I could even call them that, an acquaintance.  I’m not so sure that I would recognize many of my “friends” on Facebook if I met them in the grocery store isle.

What is a friend?  A friend is a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. A person who gives assistance; patron; supporter. confidant. companion.

And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.  James 2:23

This is the friendship that I’m most interested in; one with God.  We can be children of God and not be friends with God.  We can believe in God and not be friends with God.  God’s desire is for us to get to know Him personally, submit to His direction, draw near to Him, rely upon Him, and surrender our plan for His.  God’s desire is for us to have feelings of affection towards Him, to accept His friend request.

Are you more of an acquaintance with God? or are you keeping it personal with Him, developing a solid friendship?  Are you a friend of God?

  2. I’ve been thinking about how I’ve been using the term friend loosely lately. True friendship is rare. Our relationship with God is truly the most important!

Some say that having just one solid, genuine friend is a blessing. To have more than one…priceless. I agree, they are rare.
